Family sessions

For parents and child together, once your child is settled in the room.

In a family session, your child shows you a game they like in the room, and the clinician helps you join it: how to follow, how to describe what you see and how to end the play. Siblings can come for a session when it helps, and the clinician decides the mix with you.

The details

  • The method

Filial play: parents learn to play with their child in the same child-led way the clinician does.

  • What this is not

It is not a test of the family, and nobody is asked to say anything their child is not ready to hear.

  • How long and how often

Fifty minutes. They are usually a few sessions among the play sessions, not instead of them.

  • How it is paid

Your fee is given in writing before you start. We bill some commercial plans, or you pay yourself and get a monthly receipt.

Three questions about this

Do I stay in the room?

Most children 4 and 5 start with a parent in the room or just outside, and move toward coming in alone when they are ready. Older children usually come in on their own. The plan is made with you before the first play session.

How often and how long are sessions?

A play session is 50 minutes, usually once a week. Your clinician sets the pace with you and changes it as your child's needs change. We do not promise a number of sessions.

What is your cancellation policy?

Please give 24 hours' notice to change an appointment. Children are often unwell or overtired, and we know plans change, so just call or text and we will find another time.

Ask whether a family session fits

Tell us who is in your family, and we will suggest where to start.
